M4 iPad Pro Magic Keyboard randomly stops working

I was wondering if anyone else has been having issues with the Magic Keyboard in combination with the M4 iPad Pro.

Mine randomly stops working intermittently, the function keys still work but I can’t type anything in any app that allows text input.

This has already happened three times in the three days I’ve owned these devices and the only thing that seems to solve it is a full reboot.

This is frankly unacceptable for what these devices cost.

I am having the same problem. Restarting my iPad seems to be the fix, but I would rather not have to deal with this. This has happened both when I am connected to an external keyboard, mouse, and monitor, and it has also happened when I am not connected to anything but the Magic Keyboard.

I’m having the same issue. The touchpad and keyboard randomly cut out, and I’m forced to use the touch screen. I’m dreading to have to do a reset on my iPad. But, more importantly, I’m dreading that Apple will deny/ignore the issue and then fix it in next years launch, and we’ll be forced to endure it instead of receiving a recall. I hope that I am wrong. I’m using the iPad M4 13” with the new Magic Keyboard and the Apple Pencil Pro. I have this issue even when I’m not connected to an external display. I spent quite a lot to have to be dealing with this issue.

Update: I’ve been to the Apple Store on Tuesday and while they offered to replace the device(s) outright, as I didn’t have the boxes with me we opted for trying a clean install first, to rule out a software issue.

The iPad was restored to factory settings and then set up as new (no backup used), unfortunately this did not solve the issue.

While I’m not 100% sure it seems like the issue is triggered only while I’m connected to an external monitor (USB-C to DisplayPort cable to a 32 inch LG 4K OLED screen), I have a new appointment this afternoon but at this point I’m not fully convinced it will be solved by replacing the iPad and/or Magic Keyboard.

My intermittent keyboard problems happened without being connected to external monitors, thumb drives, or any other external connection.

They just appear. The keyboard suddenly stops working.

The only pattern seems to be that the intermittency has almost never happened while I am typing in the same app. It is common when I want to type in a different iPad app. I switch to the other app and the keyboard doesn't go with me.

To me, this suggests some sort of bizarre iOS software bug.

Update 3: False alarm, it took longer this time but the issue still occurs even on the new new iPad.

I’ve now also established that whenever I move an app to my external display I can type just fine, literally typing this in Safari on the external monitor, but if I move it back, no input will be registered. Unplugging the cable doesn’t fix the issue, the only way I can type on the iPad again is after a reboot.

I guess there has to be a bug in iPadOS triggered by my specific setup, I’m using:

External monitor: LG UltraGear 32GS95UE-B

Cable: uni USB C to Displayport Cable 8K DP 1.4 (https://amzn.eu/d/fFKBf1m)

I’ve been using the same setup with an M1 Pro MacBook and M1 MacBook Air with no issues.

Also having this same issue with 13 M4 iPad Pro. Just recently started using an external monitor. Mouse and certain keys would still work after unplugging the monitor (such as bringing up spotlight search with cmd + space), but typing letters wouldn’t work. Restart fixes it every time so far.

I am also having trouble with the keyboard on my M4 iPad Pro 13”, but not only with the magic keyboard from apple with the Logitech has the same issue, so I believe this is not a hardware thing, this is something else, APPLE, when are you releasing the next update with this fix?

Another issue I encounter is that the arrow keys do not function properly.

Something is really wrong and I bet it has to do with software.

Begin with a forced-restart of your iPad - as this will often clear an isolated software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

If the problem persists after performing the restart, it may be necessary to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, the next step is to reset the iPad to factory settings:

Otherwise, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad and Keyboard:

Genius Bar Reservation and Apple Support Options - Apple

If purchased directly from Apple, in most countries/regions you have 14-days within which you can unconditionally return your iPad or Apple accessories for exchange of refund. If applicable, you might be well advised to consider this option while it remains available to you. Upon expiry of 14-days, Apple standard warranty terms will apply.

Thie issue just started for me this week, 13" M4. No external monitor, keyboard just randomly (seemingly) stops working. The touch screen and function keys work, just not the rest of the keyboard. Interestingly, also this week, I am being frequently logged out of all signed-in websites, and the keyboard also often goes dead at this point. But the keyboard also fails independently outside of Safari and Edge. Don't know if the issues are related other than temporally for me. Such a shame, because I absolutely loved this machine and now the thing is basically unusable.

I was looking forward to the new M4 MBP this fall, but after 15 years of dealing with design flaws of graphic boards, laptop keyboards, etc, and now this, I'm strongly considering limiting my Apple ecosystem exposure to just the iPhone/iTunes/AppleTV. I don't think the risk/reward ratio justifies the significantly higher price points of anything beyond the phone.

Additional to the excellent suggestions from LotusPilot, I will suggest a few other points

Your report seems to be the only one of its kind (so far) so my feeling is this will be something unique to your setup, either a specific software glitch or a hardware defect (but which one... keyboard or iPad?)

Hit the App Store, and make sure all your third party apps are fully updated to the latest version. For apps you use regularly which might be suspects in the keyboard problem, go into each app's page and look with your eyes for any updates offered. I have seen it happen that updates exist but they have not been offered until I searched the hard way!

Try to think back to what you were doing in the last usage before the problem appeared (last hour or so). Is there a pattern, which might suggest one app is causing problems for everything else which follows?

Does the problem first appear each time in one specific app? (might be difficult to be sure if you have one app which you use more than others)

If you disconnect the Magic Keyboard after the problem appears and use your iPad stand alone, does it resume working correctly with on screen keyboard, or does the fault remain active until restart? (This might be a clue whether it is a software lock-up, -or- a hardware problem which is unlikely to roll through to standalone usage)

The bottom line is as LotusPilot suggests. If you can't resolve it in a day or two, get it raised as a case in the Apple Support system, and if it has not been cleared by Day 10 of your 14 day return window, reject the devices for replacement with new. My only reject experience (with a Series 3 Apple Watch) is that if there is a defect within 14 days they will probably offer to replace with a brand new replacement rather than have you return, refund, buy again. After 14 days you might get a service exchange unit, which could be reconditioned or new (no way to predict but I doubt there will be many reconditioned around for a few weeks yet).

I have the very same intermittent problems. I have the new 11” M4 iPad and the new 13” M4 iPad. Each has the new keyboard. Each keyboard has quit working randomly. Rebooting does not fix the problems consistently. Weirdly, waiting a day has worked. I just got 30 minutes of use today. Now I am forced to type on the glass keyboard. Argh!

This is very unacceptable. I have purchased every previous iPad and every previous iPad keyboard.  Randomness never happened before.

I too am having the same problem. The function keys remain functional, and I am able to manually enter passcodes with the number keys, but typing text, punctuation and numbers do not work. Restarting does work for a while, then the problem keeps happening again. Does seem to point towards a software issue, given that a hardware issue would not have partial dysfunction of the keyboard, and would certainly not be resolved by restarting.
