I have adjusted these before but for some reason the arrows to adjust the column sizes don’t show up, so I can’t change them. I am using my iMac laptop m2

Seems there is a knack to adjusting that "column" feature:
Eg: Open the Mail app
In a Mail window, carefully place the cursor on the dividing line and you should see the cursor change to a cross (like a dividing line with an arrow pointing left and and arrow pointing right) Click on, hold and drag the dividing line right or left while the "cross" is showing. Once you have rediscovered the knack, you'll find it works similarly in many apps.

In Column View, hover your pointer over the ll marks at the bottom of each column divider.
Mail app was as an example, since we didn't know which app you had trouble with.
Works just the same as in the Mail app in a Finder window column for me, however am still using MacOS Ventura, while you are using MacOS Sonoma.

It used to, I’ve never had a problem before. I have changed it many times but it’s only this last time that it hasn’t worked. I was wondering if there is a reason for that. Have I pressed something that may have switched the adjustment feature off?
I have never noticed those before, I haven’t been using a Mac for long so there you go. One thing I don’t understand is why I never had to use these before, is it a setting in the computer?
The change to this was, was made several macOS versions ago.
Thanks for that but I do know how to do the shifting of column sizing but for some reason the arrows are not coming up when you hover over the edges of the column I want to move. Not sure why
Seems we need to fo halt the cursor right on the dividing line ... maybe the app you are using doesn't allow column changes
Im not sure why you want me to open up the mail app, the problem ins in the finder app, I can adjust in the mail app no problem it’s just the finder app that is not working. TIA
