Will I be able to disable or opt out of AI on the future devices? I do not want this on my phone with my personal info and data.

All smart phones, including iPhones, have had some form of Artificial Intelligence on them for quite a long time. It has only been getting more attention recently because of industry buzz.

This past week I took a picture of a bird nesting under my deck. The Photos app in my iPhone 14, base model with iOS 17, identified it as an Eastern Phoebe. I looked at several other old pictures, and it correctly identified the exact name of several butterflies, reptiles, and animals. Even though they were taken with much older iPhones going back to my original from 2007.

It is not possible to purchase a modern smart phone that does not have some form of machine learning present and active.

Your phone is currently using AI. This is called Machine Learning and does many things on your device:

  • Detect objects in photos
  • Find faces in photos
  • Enhance photos
  • Suggest words while typing
  • Face ID
  • Music suggestions
  • And much more!

If you are talking specifically about Generative AI provided by Open AI, then yes you have to Allow requests to be sent to a third party server. You are not required to do this and can continue to use the Machine Learning already being done on your phone.

Some (especially local run) form of ai is cool with me… I don’t want apple to hand over my sensitive data to one of the worst ai companies out there… it’s crazy they wanna go with open.Ai (open.ai is such a misleading title as well)

As Apple explained in the presentation and has been explained here, you will need to authorize any use of an external AI.

Also, currently Apple Intelligence will only be available on the iPhone 15 Pro series and later. So, unless you have one of those phones, it's simply not an issue for now.

You are NOT addressing anyone from Apple on this user to user only forum. If you think telling other users you won't be buying an iPhone in the future affects any of us, it doesn't.

I'm sure you'll still be able to find a non-smart, flip phone somewhere. If you think you'll be able to purchase ANY smartphone from ANY manufacturer which doesn't already have or will be enhancing AI on them, think again.

I am concerned about the ability to restrict access to the new Apple Intelligence features to my high school age teen. Kids should not be able to use the AI to do their homework.

Doing internet research is OK, but asking AI to write papers or make corrections is not. Today I can restrict access to SIRI, to AI apps on the Apple Store and to web sites with integrated AI. Parental Controls should also be applicable to the new Apple Intelligence features without needing to block upgrade to IOS18.
