macOS is not allowing inbound local network connections when Firewall is active

I have two Mac M1 computers. A Mac mini, and a Macbook Air. Both are running macOS 14.5.

Up until some months ago (not sure exactly when) they would happily let me access each from the other, through Finder. I had no issues accessing files on the Macbook Air from the Mac Mini, and vice versa.

But then something changed, presumably after a macOS update.

Now I can connect to the Mini from the Macbook, and access its files. But I cant’t connect from the Mini to the Macbook. It sees the Macbook in “Network” in Finder, but can’t connect.

This shows up on the Mini after some time trying to access the MBA in Finder:

Although sometimes no error like this pops up. It just fails to show any folders / locations when I open the Macbook Air item in Network.

I’ve discovered this is only occurring if the Firewall is turned on in the Macbook.

I have all the same allowances ticked on each computer in the Firewall options. As shown here:

I also have File sharing enabled in the Sharing settings, on both computers.

I do see that the Mini has a larger range of services Allowed at the top of the list. I am not sure if that is needed on the Macbook. None of them look relevant, as they are related to Remote access services

After extensive searching online, I’ve been unable to figure out what I can do to try and resolve this. Most articles I find pertain to Blocking incoming connections, not allowing them.

Any suggestions?

Do what works.

If you have an an issue with the Firewall turned on, then turn it off.

It’s certainly useless on your own LAN. If you have multiple sharing services enabled such that it is more difficult to turn them off than to enable the firewall, then it might have some utility. Turning off all the sharing services off is more secure.

A Firewall is not an internet security feature. It is a Network Management tool to prevent users and nodes from accessing devices they shouldn’t.

Your NAT router isolates your computers from the internet (unless you poke a hole in it).

On my laptop, I do not turn on any sharing services unless I need them at that moment. When done with that task, I disable them.

Microsoft drove the firewall usage to blame users for their crappy security in the New Technology File System.

If you need a firewall when on public networks you should learn to configure the packet filter (pf). It is easier to turn off sharing services.
