Backing up an iPhone11 with iMac (using iTunes)

After a recent freeze up on my iPhone11 I decided Back-up onto my 11 yr old iMac running ios Sierra V10.12.6.

Have done previously via ITunes (Version 12.8.2.3) without a problem - admittedly a while ago!

This time I'm puzzled as to the steps required to accomplish the Back-up.

With the iPhone connected via USB (and taking a charge) there is no visibility of the phone on ITunes or Finder.

Could it be a problem with the USB cable or something more sinister?!
