Problem opening a document in Pages

I will preface by stating this my first Mac. I typed a document in Pages and emailed it to several people in my rescue group. The only people who could open and read it are Apple users. No one else can open it. Even some of the Apple users had issues when I emailed it, but I was able to copy it and send it via text and then they were able to read it. What am I doing wrong?

There are a few issues:

  • Only Pages can open a Pages document and Apple does not make Pages available for Microsoft Windows or Linux users.
    • If no one will be revising the document, it is best to Export your Pages document to PDF and send that document format via email. Everyone can open a PDF using Apple's Preview, the free Adobe Reader, or Evince on Linux.
    • If the document needs to be edited, then export and email it as a Word docx document. Anyone with Pages, MS Word, or the free LibreOffice can access that document format.
  • Versions of Pages released before Oct 2013 (e.g. Pages '08, Pages '09) cannot open the different Pages document format that was implemented after Oct 2013.
  • Double-clicking a Pages document on Windows will unzip and ruin it.
