Why would Apple security have me buy $8000 worth of Home Depot gift cards?

Apple security (I called them) has me buying thousands of dollars worth of Home Depot gift cards. Supposedly identity theft, they tell me.

You didn't call Apple Security.

You called scammers, who somehow tricked you into calling their number. Maybe they sent you a scary e-mail, or notification, that may have included a ripped-off copy of the Apple logo or the System Settings icon. Maybe they manipulated search engine results so that you found their scam site when you were looking for legitimate help.

In any case, it's a scam! Stop all contact with the scammers. Hopefully you haven't actually bought any gift cards (or if you have, hopefully you haven't had a chance to give the scammers the gift card codes yet).

FTC – Avoiding and Reporting Gift Card Scams

"Only scammers will tell you to buy a gift card, like a Google Play or Apple Card, and give them the numbers off the back of the card. No matter what they say, that’s a scam. No real business or government agency will ever tell you to buy a gift card to pay them. Always keep a copy of your gift card and store receipt. Use them to report gift card scams to the gift card company and ask for your money back."
