2013 iMac / Mac OS Catalina

Is a 2013 iMac with

Mac OS Catalina

a workable computer or is that software outdated and unusable?

Apple considers that computer obsolete for hardware repair purposes, and Catalina is the end of the line.

Catalina isn't enough to run current versions of Safari, Microsoft 365/Office, or Adobe products. However, it is good enough to run current versions of Firefox, LibreOffice, and the commercial Affinity V2 (Photo, Designer, Publisher). If things like that, and the software that you already have for the machine, are doing the job for you, you could keep using it for a while more.
