Downloading .docx file from secure site saves it as html file

When I download a .docx file from a secure site on my iPad, it saves it to the iCloud downloads folder as a .html file. When I try to rename it, the .html extension does not appear and thus can't be removed. Therefore, I am unable to open the file with Word on the iPad. Any suggestions as to how to work around this? Thank you.
