How to scroll back to re-read text while replying?

Can't reread previous text when replying to it When I am responding to a text and want to refer back to that preceding text, I cannot see the text that I am responding to if I type a long text. I As long as my reply text is short I can still scroll back up to reread the previous message. However if my text message gets very long the text box continues get larger until it takes up the entire screen then I can't scroll back. All I can see is my text message. I can’t scroll back up beyond the text that I am writing. The only way I can see the previous text is to send my response and then I can see the text that I was responding to. This is occurring on all text messages that I reply to. It doesn't matter who I'm replying to. It's quite aggravating because when replying to a text it is helpful to be able to see the text that you’re responding to so you can address any multiple questions or comments. This issue just began after I updated to iOS 16.6.1. I've tried restarting the phone but that makes no difference.

Can't scroll back to previous message while texting after iOS 17 update I remember the first time this happened was after the previous iOS 16 update. As you were texting the reply box would get bigger and bigger and hide the previous message. However, I had discovered that there was a little arrow to the left of the reply box that take you back to the previous message. Now since the 17 update that little arrow is no longer there!! There is just a + that has other settings. If I pull down on the screen it will take me back to the previous message until my reply box is too big and then it takes up the whole screen and I can't see the previous message at all!! So frustrating these updates that muck around changing things when it all worked just fine!!! How do I read my previous message now!? It's important to be able to scroll back so I can refresh my memory on everything the text said so I can reply back properly.

Hello,

Just start typing the person's name in the "to" field and press on their name. Then, the previous conversations for that person should show up:

Use Messages on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
