iphone apple music disconnects

When I have bluetooth headphones connected (any bluetooth headphones) my apple music will continue playing (I can see the timer tickting away)- the bluetooth is still connected - but I can't hear anything. Before you give me "troubleshooting," Here are the other things I've tried:

• iphone software is up to date
• restarting the phone
• disconnecting and reconnecting the bluetooth headphones
• no other bluetooth devices are connected at the same time

I'm super frustrated. Any ideas? And please don't redirect me to the wireless interference article - I've tried that too.
