Setup NAS storage for Time Machine

I want to use a NAS for the time machine. What is the best way to do this? I could buy an Aiport Extreme and use that. Can I use a RAID Drive and how to put it on my network?

Thank you

In this era, I would not newly-install an AirPort or Time Capsule device.

I have installed and configured various Synology NAS boxes for Time Machine.

To install Synology in your (usually wired) network, follow the a Synology installation instructions, and then follow the Synology instructions for enabling Time Machine server.

Other NAS vendors also have Time Machine server support.

Then use one that clearly, visibly, and explicitly supports Time Machine, and whose manufacturer actively provides support for it, because Apple won't.

Yes you could, and it will work, provided it is the most recent model. Those would be the 802.11ac "tall" AirPort Extreme Base Stations and Time Capsules.

However, even they are "old" at this point. If you can find one that's inexpensive, buy it with the knowledge that if it fails it won't owe you anything.

A RAID is not a NAS device though...

Suffice it to say that if you are going to use Time Machine, then you must use a device with documented support. BobTheFisherman provided the link.
