There are two ways to reset your password on your MacBook Air M2 without losing data, both requiring you to be connected to the internet:

1. Reset using your Apple ID (if enabled):

  • This method is only available if you set up your Mac with your Apple ID and enabled password reset with it during initial setup.
  • After entering the wrong password multiple times (usually three), you'll see a question mark icon next to the password field.
  • Click the question mark and choose "Reset password using your Apple ID".
  • Enter your Apple ID credentials and follow the on-screen instructions to create a new password.

2. Reset using Recovery Key (if created):

  • This method involves using a Recovery Key, a long string of characters you create during FileVault disk encryption setup.
  • If you have your Recovery Key, restart your Mac while holding down Command (⌘) + R keys.
  • This will boot your Mac into macOS Recovery.
  • In the menu bar, choose "Utilities" > "Terminal".
  • Type in "resetpassword" and press Enter.
  • The Reset Password assistant will launch. Choose your disk and user account.
  • Enter your Recovery Key and follow the on-screen instructions to create a new password.

Important points to remember:

  • If you don't see the option to reset with your Apple ID or don't have your Recovery Key, you might need to erase your entire disk and reinstall macOS, which would lead to data loss.

It's highly recommended to create a strong password and keep your Recovery Key safe in case you forget your password again in the future.
