How can I stop Photo shuffle from blurring my images?

Trying to use photo shuffle for photos with text is really annoying because the wallpaper versions just crop automatically, even though I already cropped the photos to wallpaper size.

It doesn't crop them in the center either, so a lot of the photos end up looking really awkward. Not to mention they're annoyingly blurry!

I'm unable to zoom in or out in photo shuffle mode, so I can't edit the weird cropping and zooming situation. That's what really doesn't make any sense to me -- why can't I control how the photos show up even though I can for individual photos?

I've heard sometimes that iOS 16 is less finicky. 😬
