Audacity Error 9986 Internal Port Audio Error

I've downloaded Audacity for recording purposes and it keeps crashing with the error message Error 9986 Internal Port Audio Error. I've tried Audacity forums for an answer and it seems some other laptop users experience the same problem. Does anyone know if this is related to Apple firewalls and if so, is it possible to get around it?
