Is it possible to CONVERT (not create) an existing album to a SHARED album. I know how to create a shared album, etc but rather than create a new shared album, add photos, etc I would just like to CONVERT an existing non-shared album if possible. Thanks all

No, a direct conversion is not possible. Shared albums are not really albums. They are just shown in the Photos Library, but are storing the photos separately from the photos in the library and need their own copies of the photos, special copies, optimised for sharing. When we share photos in a shared album, Photos is removing some of the metadata tags for privacy reasons and scaling the photos down to 2048 pixel at the longest edge. And the original versions with the metadata intact will remain in our Photos library at the full resolution.
