No "Device" appears in my iTunes list

I'm trying to move some ebooks from my desktop computer to my iPad, and if I plug in the iPad to the desktop, nothing happens. It doesn't show up anywhere, in iTunes, on the desktop, or anywhere else. How can I move the files to my iPad?

That helped. I'd done that before, but this time it worked. I plugged it into a direct USB port -as opposed to a hub-on the computer, the iPad came up in the Finder sidebar, but then there was a new problem: the "contents" area of the iPad is greyed out, and if I try to "sync" my books on the iPad/computer with the computer/iPad, according to the "sync" instructions, "Are you sure you want to remove existing music, movies, tv shows and books from this iPad and sync..."-which I definitely don't want to do. This is getting pretty negative and complicated. What is going on?
