How to upgrade my old 2011 imac To Sonoma macOS

When I upgraded my iMac. It is dragging and waiting tons of time for the applications. How can I fix the problems with Sonoma macOS?

A 2011 iMac cannot be upgraded beyond High Sierra. See the following from Identify your iMac model - Apple Support

You can't install Sonoma – or any other version of macOS later than High Sierra.


You can install more RAM - up to

  • 16 GB (official) or 32 GB (actual) on a 21.5" Mid 2011 iMac
  • 16 GB (official) or 32 GB (actual) on a 27" Mid 2011 iMac
  • 8 GB (official) or 16 GB (actual) on a 21.5" Late 2011 iMac

But you might have enough already.


Do you have. mechanical hard drive, or a SSD? How full is your drive? Filling either type of drive close to the brim can make things slow down from fragmentation (on a hard drive) and from the computer not being able to hide the overhead of managing the free space.
