Are AirTags effective for tracking pets outside of home?

I have attached an AirTag to each of my cats in case they get lost etc. I didn’t realise for the AirTags to work they need to be within my WiFi network of Bluetooth vicinity.

What is the point of them? When I look at Find My App they all are non discoverable as they are out of the home. Its a huge waste of money if I am unable to track my cats

What gave you the idea that Apple designed their AirTags for tracking pets? Did you see this is some Apple advertising or got this advise from an Apple employee when you went to purchase one? Sure, it doesn't help that third-party vendors provide pet collars that can hold these tags, but IMHO, they are just taking advantage of folks even knowing that this is not what Apple designed for these tags to do.

If you want to track your cat, then you should consider getting a dedicated tracking device that is based on GPS technology, not a Bluetooth / crowdsourcing one.

Air tags are indeed poor for “tracking” ANYTHING on the move. (especially cats who often tend to avoid strangers)

They also incessantly beep when you’re away from home; something which can’t be good for ANY animal’s general demeanor.

They ARE designed to “locate” stationary items in the general vicinity of other Apple devices.

For this they perform quite well.
