M1 Mac is not playing videos or music

M1 Mac isn't playing any videos or music. On YouTube, the video will take a moment to get going and then will start the time and the captions will rotate through just like the video is playing as normal, but there is no sound and no visual changes. I can click through to different time stamps and the time, captions, and static image will change, but no audio or actual video playing.

On the Apple Music app, when I go to play a playlist, it will try and play a second or two of a song (with no actual sound coming out) before it moves onto the next song.

It's not just YouTube and safari, it's any video playing website, and multiple browsers.

I have tried

  • Quitting and restarting Safari
  • Restarting the computer
  • Shutting down the computer, waiting 30 seconds, and restarting the computer
  • Starting the computer in Safe Mode

MacBook Pro 14″, macOS 14.5

"M1 Mac is not playing videos or music: I've tried those and it's still happening.

Interestingly, if I am on headphones/AirPods, everything works like normal. The second I take them off, the video and audio stop. Thank you for your suggestions, anything else I can try?

You are welcome.

Troubleshooting Audio and Videos on a Mac:

Some more things to try...

A. Clear Temporary Internet Files:

In a Safari, clear your Temporary Internet Files. Cookies may reset a few buttons on YouTube and such sites. Go here for Safari: (History and Cache)

B. Single-Out this Browser:

What happens when you try another browser? Do you still get the same error? If so, then it is a macOS error. If not, then it is a configuration within this browser.

C. Play a Home Video:

Record a home video using your computer or iPhone. Open and then play it n your Mac, seeing if you still get this issue. If not, then it may be an issue with the files.

D. Try a Different Media Player:

What happens when you try a different player? Open the file with QuickTime Player, and then see if you can play it with that. You’ll find it in the App Store.

E. View System Information:

Hold down the option key and then click the Apple logo on the menu bar. Then, select System Information…. What do you see for audio devices? Is nothing seen for audio input and for output? If not, and the reinstall didn’t fix this, then it may be a hardware issue, in which case, you may have to get this serviced.

F. Get this Mac Serviced...

Contact Apple, and setup a Genius Bar Appointment at your local Apple Store, or see an AASP (Apple Authorized Service Provider) in your local area.

—Contacting Apple:

Or...

— Contacting an AASP:

  1. Go Here: Find Locations - Apple Authorized Reseller
  2. Click: Service & Support
  3. Enter: your location information
  4. See: if there is an AASP nearby
  5. Contact: an AASP that shows up, and find out more about the services that they offer to fix the Mac

Excellent job troubleshooting.

I agree: It is time to get this serviced.

Troubleshooting Audio and Videos on a Mac:

Three things to try...

A. Single-Out this User:

For troubleshooting purposes, create a new Administrator user. Log into it, and then see if you get this error. If not, then it is an error with the current user. If so, then it is an error with the entire macOS. Trash this user once this has been tried.

B. Clear Temporary Internet Files

Try clearing your Temporary Internet Files (Cookies & Cache) of Safari. Cookies perform remembrance of certain site-entered data. Whereas Cache keeps a snapshot of the last time you visited a site.  Use this Link: Clearing History and Cache - Apple Communities

If nothing above works...

C. Reinstall the macOS:

Nothing would be lost. It's just that misplaced items would be placed back to where they should be and corrupt system files would be replaced by clean files. Go Here: Reinstall macOS - Apple Support. Use the third bulleted method: [command + r]. To prevent data loss, be sure to back up your Mac with Time Machine, prior to the reinstall.

Thank you for the help.

I tried all of those methods and none of them fixed it. It still happens on other browsers. I can't play any videos from photos or QuickTime. The input and outputs all have information associated with it (1 input, 2 outputs).

I think my only avenue at this point is to take it in to be serviced.

Thank you again!
