Strange "Shadow Screen" issue.

Hello,

Late last year I got a macbook pro. Everything has been working fine until a couple days ago when something weird started happening to the display. Whenever it turns off instead of turning back on normally it has a chance of coming back almost completely black with what I can only describe as shadows of the windows I had opened. Restarting can fix it but only has a 50/50 shot, sometimes requiring multiple restarts to get it working again. The attached images don't exactly do it justice, it looks a lot darker in person.

And how does it look when you turn the brightness up to something usable...?
