In "Apple Devices for Windows", how to get past the "trust" button?
In the "Apple Devices for Windows" app, the first time it sees a device, it asks "Trust '<mydevicename>'? and says "To sync this computer with your iPhone, click Trust, then tap Trust on the device." and has a "Trust" button (black text on white background - not a blue background as shown in some Apple Support web
pages). My device is listed at the top of the app window and in the sidebar on the left. On the sidebar, below the device name, is a submenu option "Trust".
Clicking on the "Trust" button causes an "I'm thinking" circle for about 2 seconds, but nothing else happens as shown in the attached screenshot.
The device appears and disappears as I plug it in and unplug it, so I know the USB cable works and the app is seeing the device. The app presents the correct device name (in purple above, in three places), so they are talking. When asked at the device, I tell the device to trust the computer and input my PIN. I know that all works with respect to the computer because if I have File Explorer open, my device appears and disappears as "Apple iPhone" as I plug it in and unplug it. I know that I am having my device trust the computer because under "Apple iPhone" in File Explorer, I cannot see the "Internal Storage" folder contents until I tell my device to trust the computer and, once trusted, I can scroll through my photos in File Explorer.
I am running Win11 and have it all updated. I have an iPhone 12, all updated, running iOS 17.5.1. I have "Apple Devices for Windows" version 1.4.6.87 (1.1030.22273.0). I've rebooted, uninstalled the app, rebooted, installed the app, rebooted, run the app and still get the same result. Due to a recent clean install of Win11, I have never had iTunes installed on this machine.
What I have already tried/checked:
(1) Checked that Apple Mobile Device Process runs at startup and is running when I am using the "Apple Devices for Windows" app.
(2) Checked that the USB cable is working and the computer and device are talking to each other.
(3) Checked that the app recognizes the device, and knows its name.
(4) Investigated all of the possible buttons I could push on the app (there's not that many).
(5) Searched through the Apple support pages and the Apple Community pages.
(6) Per some online chatter, checked that the Windows Driver for Apple is updated. It is "Apple, Inc. - USBDevice - 538.0.0.0".
(7) Did an Apple Support chat. After the technician ran out of things to try, they referred me to a senior technician for a phone call.
(8) Talked with senior technician and they ran out of suggestions and invoked a support boundary, asserting that it's a Microsoft problem.
I'm here today because I already know that Microsoft will invoke a support boundary in the other direction.
Has anyone had this problem and found a solution (or even a cause) for this?
