Cannot confirm Mac password to keep using iCloud

Hi all, I recently got my first Mac, and started setting it up. In settings I received the Apple ID suggestion to confirm my Mac password to keep using iCloud. Beside this I could press continue. However when I press continue one of two things happen. Either a small window opens with a loading symbol for a short while before disappearing, or the settings window freezes up for a few seconds. In either situation, once the loading window dissapears or the settings window unfreezes, nothing changes. I am left with the same prompt. I cannot figure out how to confirm my Mac password. Any help greatly appreciated1
