Mail app on 2017 Macbook Air

Hello-

I am quickly running out of storage on my 2017 macbook air.

I am a student who cannot afford to upgrade at the moment. The application that is taking up the most space is the mail app which does not work any longer and cannot be deleted.

Is there any way to get the mail app off of my computer? It would be a life saver
