migration assistant from iMac to new Macbook air, refuses to work

I can't transfer data using the migration assistant from iMac to new Macbook air, however, there's no transfer out (to) option when I open migration assistant on my iMac. I can't transfer in on Macbook: doesn't recognise the iMac. I'm using a cable, not wifi (I tried it but same problem).
