Yup… in a nutshell, I had used less than half of the 512 of the old iPadPro, and had pared it down to a more manageable size by limiting amount of space used for music, videos etc.
I hadn’t realized that podcasts were actually being downloaded to the iPad as I listened to them — until I ran into this storage issue for transfer. The procedure for deleting them after this has occurred is not crystal clear, or at least it didn’t initially work that way for me here as after deleting them, they still seemed to be hoarding 70Gb of space on the old iPad. I believe I now have this fixed but 🤷 — we’ll see, I guess.
The issue with storage, and just how much I had used, and how much I would require was clearly discussed at the apple store… and the question as to transferring only what I needed was discussed, including me asking if the option of using an extHD for projects (LumaFusion, iMovie, Affinity Suite) was viable. All were met with an affirmative.
Ordinarily I would have bought the 512 for the iPad air but $$$ did not make sense when the cost of that ‘option’ vs the cost of extHD(s) were weighed against each other.
Truthfully, my reliance on the iPad is not nearly as heavy as it has been in the past. Most of my content creation is now done on my MacStudioMax — where much of the content is saved to, yup, extHDs. I was expecting much the same scenario to work with the new iPads.
If it comes down to it, I’ll probably either give this iPad to a family member, and decide what to do next, or just forget about transferring any files over to this new one, and instal the necessary apps manually, keeping the old ones intact on the old iPad.
What I had really expected was that I would be able to use the auto transfer process, and select only the apps and data that I wanted transferred. This would have left me with a very functional iPad Air for coaching and online requirements (VideoPencil), and business needs (Square, QBO) — with plenty of room to spare. It would not require music, a synced photo library, podcasts etc as those are all accessible on my 1Tb iPhone.
it seemed like such a simple solution — and one I expected would be a no-brainer after over 40 years of computing with Apple devices!
Anyway, I appreciate your taking the time to reply to my post KaeBFly 🙏
