New iPad doesn’t have enough room to set up from old ipad

Just bought an 11” iPad Air 12

my old iPad Pro 512 has more stuff on it ( by about 40 gbs) than will fit on the new iPad Air.

I’ve tried going through the transfer process but can’t get to any place where I can only transfer certain data/apps. I don’t need everything that was on the old one, but I intend to keep everything there for use as my second iPad., so won’t be deleting more from it than I already have.

Stumped as to how to proceed.

Short of deleting some data from the old iPad and then doing a backup that you can restore to the new one you won’t be able to transfer like you are wanting to do. And to be fair…if you knew you had an iPad with more storage originally and knew how much you had stored on that iPad it should have been known that you would need at least one with the same amount of storage space. Only reason to downgrade in space is if you had the bigger storage but didn’t use enough of it to justify having that much space. Or if you planned to start from scratch. Unless you told the person at Apple how much of your storage you had used on the old one there is no reason they would tell you that you absolutely had to get the same storage space amount. They don’t automatically go look in your settings to see how much space you used before. You are still in the return/exchange period so you could always go back and exchange for more storage space which honestly sounds like you need to unless you don’t plan to use the new iPad in a similar manner that you did the old one.

Well your new ipad has to be 512GB or more to transfer data.

I had my old one with me. I had less than 200 gb used of the 512.

I had said I would use an external USB for any major content projects in LumaFusion etc, and don’t really put many photos on my iPad.

I let them know the apps, and the usage I was going to use it for, and that apps wise I would be well below the 100Gb mark, leaving room for simple docs.

So, it wasn’t like I hadn’t done my due diligence or informed them of exactly what I wanted it for.

I also spent the day saving all 27Gb of LumaFusion files to an extHD then deleting them from the iPad; and had quit the podcast app on my iPad, however I still somehow have 70Gb old podcasts that are part of the problem. I had deleted them, or thought I had, making the 128gb iPad Air solution workable.

I’m 2 hours away from the Apple Store so it’s not like I have a quick trip solution either. Next time I’ll be near the store will be 3 weeks from now, and 5 - 6 weeks from date of purchase.

I understand what you are saying but the key part is that knowing what you planned to do with the new iPad did not tell them how much storage you had already used on the old iPad (which without that detail everything else you stated made the 256GB iPad a good choice. The only reason a 512 would have been a better choice is solely on the issue you started this with…not being able to transfer your data from the old iPad). You did not say that the data on the old iPad was less than 200GB. You said the old iPad had more data on it than would fit on the new one by about 40GBs. Which would mean that the old iPad had more than 256GBs used on it….unless you are saying that it now has less than 200GBs after some deleting.

Are you saying that you resolved your issue now after deleting the 70GBs of old podcasts that you thought you had deleted before or are you saying the podcasts won’t delete when you say they are part of the problem?

As far as being able to get back to the Apple Store quickly…I understand as the closest one to me is a little over 100 miles but if ultimately you realize it might be a good idea to go with a bigger storage iPad you may need to try and make the trip happen. It’s not a requirement but if you don’t want to be stuck with what may not be the best option for you long term it’s something to figure out. Although if you’re saying going in 3 weeks will be 5-6 weeks from the date of purchase you might already be past the return period.

Yup… in a nutshell, I had used less than half of the 512 of the old iPadPro, and had pared it down to a more manageable size by limiting amount of space used for music, videos etc.

I hadn’t realized that podcasts were actually being downloaded to the iPad as I listened to them — until I ran into this storage issue for transfer. The procedure for deleting them after this has occurred is not crystal clear, or at least it didn’t initially work that way for me here as after deleting them, they still seemed to be hoarding 70Gb of space on the old iPad. I believe I now have this fixed but 🤷 — we’ll see, I guess.

The issue with storage, and just how much I had used, and how much I would require was clearly discussed at the apple store… and the question as to transferring only what I needed was discussed, including me asking if the option of using an extHD for projects (LumaFusion, iMovie, Affinity Suite) was viable. All were met with an affirmative.

Ordinarily I would have bought the 512 for the iPad air but $$$ did not make sense when the cost of that ‘option’ vs the cost of extHD(s) were weighed against each other.

Truthfully, my reliance on the iPad is not nearly as heavy as it has been in the past. Most of my content creation is now done on my MacStudioMax — where much of the content is saved to, yup, extHDs. I was expecting much the same scenario to work with the new iPads.

If it comes down to it, I’ll probably either give this iPad to a family member, and decide what to do next, or just forget about transferring any files over to this new one, and instal the necessary apps manually, keeping the old ones intact on the old iPad.

What I had really expected was that I would be able to use the auto transfer process, and select only the apps and data that I wanted transferred. This would have left me with a very functional iPad Air for coaching and online requirements (VideoPencil), and business needs (Square, QBO) — with plenty of room to spare. It would not require music, a synced photo library, podcasts etc as those are all accessible on my 1Tb iPhone.

it seemed like such a simple solution — and one I expected would be a no-brainer after over 40 years of computing with Apple devices!

Anyway, I appreciate your taking the time to reply to my post KaeBFly 🙏
