homepods make me crazy. Who is in charge of Apple Home control?

I have 2 homes with Apple speakers.

in my main home, i use homepod mini upstairs and downstairs.

To play music is very challenging, if I tap on the home app, I have no way to change the music.

I am not a programmer but there is noway I would do something so bad. Apple you lost me here. Make it work and make it SIMPLER.
