ExFat not mounting in Sonoma, problem solved by one modification.
I've noticed that quite a few people including myself were having or are having problems with there external USB or SSD drives formatted to ExFat not being recognized on Sonoma after unplugging and plugging in again.
I found a solution to the problem with one minor modification.
The first time I formatted my external 1tb ssd to ExFat on my MacBook M1 air I noticed that it was formatting it to a GUI partition with the FAT32 partition in front of the ExFat Partition. I was having the same problem everyone else was having as mentioned above. I recalled though that I had formatted some 32gb and 256gb USB sticks to ExFat without any problems and that they still recognize on Sonoma without any problems.
It occurred to me that the FAT32 partition was likely the culprit causing the external 1tb SSD to not mount on my Mac M1. What I did was go into my Linux machine and formatted the entire drive (one partition) to ExFat and then loaded up the drive with the files that I wanted to transfer. Problem solved, the drive mounted perfectly with no problems.
