Is there a slide and negative scanner that works seamlessly with the MacBook Pro?

I have inherited many slides from my parents and would like to scan them into my MacBook pro.

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 10.13

Apple does not provide AirPrint (e.g. Image Capture) native support for slide and negative scanners. You are either at the mercy of the scanner vendor, who may very well abruptly end scanner driver support, or the third-party VueScan Professional which may support slide and negative scanners without any vendor drivers.

When you look up the device on the VueScan vendor's site, they will tell you if the scanner can or cannot be used without any vendor drivers. For instance, VueScan Professional supports the Epson V700, V750, V800, and V850 scanners without any other drivers, but the V600 requires current compatible Epson drivers to be used with VueScan. I would not purchase any slide and negative scanner without first checking the VueScan's ability to drive it without vendor drivers.

I happen to have owned VueScan Professional since 2010 and receive no benefit from the vendor for mentioning their product here.

There is no film scanner that works seamlessly with any operating system platform that I know of, the cheaper ones especially. The hardware may be relatively decent but the software is kludgy. In my opinion you would have to be in the thousands of dollars range before you could even start to approach “seamlessly”

Look into online companies like Legacy Box who offer professional services for this sort of thing at somewhat decent prices.

Thank you! I've been working on this question for four hours now, and your reply is so helpful. I was just looking at the V600 and wasn't sure if it was the answer. I'll take a look at the V850 and VueScan Professional. One more question...do you think it's worth it to get VueScan Professional over Basic or Standard? Thanks once again for your rapid and very helpful response.

In the 14 years that I have been using VueScan Professional, I have not once had to pay any additional upgrade fees to the vendor to keep the software current. Although VueScan Professional may cost slightly more than Basic or Standard, it is well worth the extra cost in the long run. It would likely provide more functionality than the less expensive versions that you will need with a high-end scanner.
