Midi, Soundflower, and internal record options

I would like to continue the discussion started at the following thread...Screen recording - no sound - Apple Community, what is the latest as of late June, 2024?

What are the latest options for recording off of the screen? Is Soundflower still a thing? Do I have to download additional software to make Soundflower work correctly? My goal is to merge two different sources on my mac, and then recapture them together as one file. The words on the left are from an online source, the script plays back using A.I. Voice while the text scrolls. I just want both of those images to play t the same time and be recaptured as one new file. Nothing is pirated, it is all related to my written script and permission to use the musical performance.

As far as I know, Soundflower has not been updated since Big Sur and was never updated for Apple Silicon. It appears to me to have been abandoned.

If you want to stick with freeware, the replacement would be Blackhole Audio. I don't advocate it, but it does work and many people use it in conjunction with Audio Midi Setup to create aggreate and/or multi-output devices to route audio between apps.

I tend to suggest Rogue Amoeba Loopback because I think it's a more capable and reliable audio routing utility. It's a commercial product that you have to purchase.

Depending on your needs, you might consider Screenflow to capture audio & video simultaneously. I use it and it works great.

My first reply was based on your inquiry about Soundflower, assuming you were asking how to capture audio at the same time you record screen video with QuickTime. QT by itself can capture video or audio but not both at the same time; that's where Soundflower and now BlackHole Audio come into play. They can be set up to route audio into QT to be recorded by QT along with the video. This is a DIY method of capturing screen video & audio simultaneously. It's popular because it's "free."

Loopback is an audio routing utility that performs functions similar to what Soundflower & BlackHole Audio do, but it has much more capability than either of those freeware apps. Audio Hijack is an audio recording app, it would not be useful for routing audio for your purposes.

EaseUS is a desktop screen recording app that can capture video & audio at the same time. I'm sorry to hear you ran into a problem with EaseUS. It sounds like you purchased it directly from EaseUS and you should have received a license code via email that you would have had to enter in the app to authorize your use. Sounds like that didn't happen and the app then prompted you to pay as if you had never purchased it.

Screenflow is designed for video capture (desktop screen recording) but it also has a built-in video editor. You do not need to use the editor. In fact, so far I have only used it to capture streaming video and export/save to disk in a number of different formats including MP4.

Hi Martin, thank you for your answer. Early today I temporarily purchased Easeus, downloaded it, seemed to do what I wanted it to do, but when I tried to review a short sample that I recorded, payment was requested after I had already paid 79 dollars minus a 10% discount for a lifetime of upgrades. So I immediately canceled as once I commit to a product by paying for a lifetime of upgrades, I don't expect to be asked to pay again before I can even see my first recorded sample using their product. I have checked out Loopback. Loopback and Audio hi-jack are offered by the same company. I don't understand if I need both, or if Loopback is the foundational piece and Audio Hijack is supplemental, or if I can just get Audio Hijack, which for my intention of combining two pieces of completed video, one from Medium dot com, one from my desktop, I think would be all I need. But if I buy both at the same time there is a 30 dollar discount. I think I liked Easeus, but I have already gotten a refund through their third party payment processor. Was I supposed to give them a license number after I purchased, or were they supposed to send me a license number and I never got it? I noticed that Jane Zhou, who wrote the article about Easeus, has dead links attributed to her on her bio page. I will investigate screenflow.

I quickly checked out Screenflow. It probably is a fine product from what I briefly saw, but I am a former video editor who worked with actual hardware gear and an RS-422 controller but am not well versed editing on a computer. I think at this point my preference would have been Easeus, but I am happy to go with Loopback but definitely need advice regarding Loopback versus Audio Hijack.
