macbook display support

BLUF: Which MacBook or MacBook Pro can support three externally connected displays? These displays would be separate from the laptop display itself.

Scenario:

I have a 2019 27inch iMac with two external displays connected to it. It doesn't appear that Apple is going to release another 27 inch iMac in the near future. Therefore, I am probably looking at buying a MacBook or a MacBook Pro depending on which one will support three displays.

Much gratitude in advance for any and all help.

14" and 16" MacBook Pros using the M3 Max chip.

See: MacBook Pro - Tech Specs - Apple

MacBook Pro (14-inch, M3 Pro or M3 Max, Nov 2023) - Technical Specifications - Apple Support

MacBook Pro (16-inch, Nov 2023) - Technical Specifications - Apple Support

Now-discontinued 14" and 16" MacBook Pros using the M1 Max chip or the M2 Max chip can do this, too.

MacBook Pro (14-inch, 2021) - Technical Specifications - Apple Support

MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2021) - Technical Specifications - Apple Support

MacBook Pro (14-inch, 2023) - Technical Specifications - Apple Support

MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2023) - Technical Specifications - Apple Support

Check Technical Specifications for details.

Mac notebooks that use base M1/M2/M3 chips, or that use M1/M2/M3 Pro chips, do not support this. So you'd be looking only at the high-end MacBook Pros.

Getting 3 External Displays:

The J5 USB-C Dual HDMI Docking Station allows for more than two extra monitors. How so? Well, plug in a display projector the Mac using the USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter and then plug the J5 hub with 2 HDMI displays (one 4K), and then you'll have 3 external screens. It all mirrors and extends.
