External Drive now "Read Only"

I've been trying to figure out why my external drive ( WD My Passport Ultra 2 TB) all of a sudden became Read Only. I verified and made sure I changed the permission to show Read/Write. I have a MacBook Air 2014 running on macOS Big Sur V 11.7.10.

I can't even copy data to another external drive.

thank you,

If its NTFS, Macs can't normally write to those drives. NTFS is a Windows only format and requires 3rd party drivers like Paragon or Tuxera to write to drives formatted as such.

If you did recently update your macOS version, that usually disables the 3rd party drivers.

You need to go to the driver provider's website and get an update for the driver for your new macOS version.
