I read somewhere that you must find the original entry in iCal that you first made when you created the event and only from that you can then delete all future events. How would you ever find that first event entry to begin with?

No, this does not work. There have been complaints and forums for years about this. My question was regarding how to find the original event in order to try it that way. The other way works for 2 seconds then repopulates. Incredibly frustrating!!
Just delete the event you wish and you’ll have the option to delete future events
