Temporarily using a walker - Apple Watch

I am temporarily using a Walker due to an injury.

I want to register my daily steps on my Apple Watch.

Hi GmaHarryTree. Welcome to the "Walker Club." I use a walker frequently. Here are the work arounds I've used:

  • If I am outside taking a walk, on my watch, I select Workout > Outdoor Walk. Just be sure to turn it off when done.
  • But if I am just trying to count steps during daily activity, I slip my Apple Watch into a side pocket that catches the movement of my hips. Sometimes I slip my watch into a small, cross body purse that fits against my hip. That works, too. Keep in mind that this will skew your heart rate readings. But it works if steps are your primary goal.
  • Finally, if all else fails, I will slip my watch into my sock around my ankle.

These are not perfect solutions but they may work since your situation is temporary. I know in my case, these tricks help me give an accurate step reading to my physical therapist. For everyone else, these tips also work to capture steps when pushing a shopping cart or stroller. They also work when using recumbent exercise devices that require no hand/arm movement.

The Apple Watch does not really know what position your body is in.

The Apple Watch uses the accelerometer to determine that your Apple Watch arm is swinging as you are walking.

Knitters, sitting in a chair, always get their stand credit and huge step counts.

Professional Chefs, on their feet, working in a kitchen all day, miss their hourly stands, because their Apple Watch arm is often holding food being chopped, or carrying something when walking, or holding a pot, pan, etc…
