How to highlight or mark up a screenshot on Mac?

I use the screen capture tool Snagit a lot on Windows and Mac. It's like the Windows Snipping Tool, but a lot more powerful. Windows has the Snipping tool. Is there a similar version on Mac? Or a way to accomplish something similar?

I want to press CMD+Shift+4, select the portion I want, and mark it up by either highlighting, annotating, typing text, or drawing arrows.

Thanks in advance!

Use the screen capture shortcut control+shift+cmd+4 to select your screenshot. Then, immediately launch Apple's Preview application and select File menu > New From Clipboard. Now that you have your screenshot open in Preview, you can press shift+cmd+A to open the Markup toolbar or click on the Tools menu to access the annotation features.

Note that annotations to an image are a one-shot deal and once the image is saved, those annotations cannot be revised or undone because they are flattened into the image.
