Stop TextEdit From Opening New Documents In Tabs

I've been having issues where when I open a TextEdit document, even if it was new, it opens in a tab. The person who started the previous thread of the same name (Stop TextEdit From Opening New Documents … - Apple Community) seemed to have the same problem, even as far as it behaving differently on different computers. Reading through it, there didn't seem to be a concrete solution, but other comments seemed to focus around undocumented keyboard shortcuts. If this is indeed the same behavior the original author was experiencing, I may have the solution.

It may be that the Tab Bar was set to show at all times. If so, with TextEdit open and in focus, select View > Hide Tab Bar. This turns off the Tab Bar. With that, a CMD+n opens a new TextEdit in a window, while OPT+CMD+n turns on the Tab Bar in an open TextEdit document, and creates a new document in a tab next to it.

I hope this helps.
