IPhone 4 iCloud sign in issues

When I try to sign in into my iCloud account on my iPhone 4 it says to enter my password and verification code, I learnt that you can get the verification code On a different Apple device through [Your name] - Password and Security - Get Verification Code but when I follow the instructions it says that either the account or password is wrong.
