Tracks not appearing in iTunes

I use iTunes on my laptop, Windows 11 Home. I also have Music installed on my iPad. I have approximately 1600 tracks in iTunes, most of which I ripped to iTunes (not direct purchases from iTunes store). I use iTunes infrequently. Yesterday I noticed a few things: approximately two-thirds of the tracks were not readily available. There seem to be several issues in iTunes:

  • Many songs had an exclamation point in front of the track. When I clicked the ! , a message opened: "The song 'title' could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" and the option Locate or Cancel. Choosing Locate still did not find the file. Choosing Cancel, a cloud then appeared next to the track title and when I clicked that, the song downloaded and appeared in the Library.
  • Some tracks were totally greyed out, without the ! but with a dotted-line cloud also greyed out
  • Some tracks were not greyed out but had a solid-line cloud with an X in it.

I have not changed any settings within iTunes or Music. I have been clicking and changing each "exclamation point" track one by one but it's tedious. It also does not help me with the tracks that are just outright missing. I signed out of the store on both my laptop and iPad and there was no change when I signed back in.

Can someone please tell me how to get my iTunes Library back in order, with all of the tracks back where they belong? Thanks in advance.

  • An album that I added Monday appeared in iTunes immediately, but today it's greyed out. That same album is not greyed out and is playable, on my iPad.
