Airpod Pro gen 2 subpar noise cancellation

Last week I replaced my airpod pro gen 1's with the gen 2's after having read numerous glowing product reviews by customers and online product reviewers. These gen 2's received the best overall ratings for iPhone users.

Unfortunately these gen 2's (with noise cancellation on) leak some surrounding sounds. My former gen 1 pro's had excellent noise cancellation. They were perfect for flights, subways and any noisy surroundings.

I've used the ear tip fit test. The large tips get a "good seal" result. Yet, on a flight a few days ago, I could hear the plane's engines, people talking, snacks being opened, etc... All the sounds my former gen 1 pro's excellently cancelled. The only work around I've found is increasing the volume which shouldn't be necessary and is definitely not helpful.

Has anyone else experienced this downgrade in performance? Found any solutions?

I'm already looking into other brands of noise cancelling earbuds... might return these apple airpods. Very disappointing.
