Phone screen is black after being put on the charger

This has happened a couple times where my phone screen goes black and won’t work when I put it on the charger for the night. I do a hard reset the phone comes back on and is fully charged. The bad part is nothing on my phone will work when it goes black. So my alarm for work won’t go off. Is this a device defect or what is the issue and how do I fix it?
