Files disappearing randomly

Have you run Disk Utility's Disk First Aid on all connected drives?

In Disk Utility>View, select Show all Devices, highlight the top left entry.

Run Disk First Aid on all items in the left panel, from top down.

Are you running any VPN, Anti-Virus, or Cleaning apps?

I do not have time machine .. will set up a back up now. Files are not in the cloud...

I changed my passwords on gmail just in case there was a hacker (although files are not exciting or any value to others)

My next plan is to take to a data recovery expert to see if they can be found...unless someone here can help

Make sure your Credit Card has a very high credit limit and this is not a flippant statement

They will probable inform you that they may be able to recovery some data ( operative word, some )

As for Viruses - there are no viruses in the wild that will effect macOS

Hackers - the hacker would require direct and on-hand access to this computer

Then, be able to guess the computer password.

Only then could they plant there Hacking Software on this computer
