How to sync an old iOS 12 iPhone 8 with iCloud?

Hello,

I'm embarrassed to ask but trying to figure this out has stumped me. I am awful at technology and have got in a pickle with my phone. I have an iPhone 8 and have not updated it so am still on iOS 12. (Through fear I would lose my photos and didn't know how to save them before updating as I read horror stories of people losing photos and it wouldn't back up as no space). Recently I discovered my phone had self deleted its first 6 months of photos. Luckily I managed to get into my iCloud and they were there, phew. I then bought more storage space to be able to save all my others into the iCloud.

-My phone started to sync and then added the missing 6 months back ON to the phone (I didn't know this would happen), it then told me it was stopping syncing as there was no room on the phone so has paused putting all my other photos into iCloud but has randomly picked some not in any date order to go on.

-I deleted some apps to make room for the now extra photos to be back on there but I cannot find how to make it start syncing again. All instructions seem to be for newer iOS. It's nearly been a week and it hasn't auto tried to do it at all, if that is even a thing?

Is there any way I can do this? Currently it's missing about 5000 items ( I know, I wasn't very diligent at deleting things) and I don't want to set up my new phone (iPhone 15) until I know these are all safe as it's a significant portion of memories on there. I however need my new phone to be used for tickets to get into Wembley on Saturday as I almost didn't get in to a show on Friday just gone as the app wasn't the latest version so didn't scan. Hugely stressful! So I need to figure this out quickly!

Mostly I am mad at myself at being beaten by technology when everyone else seems to manage. Is anyone able to help me please? Sorry for the essay also please be assured I will never let it get to this point again with my new phone!

Thank you in advance!

Hello, Yes that is switched on, it gives me the options of

Optimise iPhone Storage (this one is ticked)

Download and Keep Originals

In settings under my name it says

iPhone not backed up

and has a red notification, and that it hasn't been done since 31 October 2019, will pressing Back up now help at all? I'm so sorry for just how bad I am at this stuff!

Ok, so I have backed up the phone so the notification telling me it hadn't been done has now gone. This took hours and I presumed it was adding all the missing photos into my iCloud at the same time but it didn't.

My daughter said when she did hers the bar I had while doing it which said something like "estimated time to backup(but gave no time)" when that finished it then would tell me how long it would take and go through a process again. In effect waiting for one thing to complete which I had and then the next stage. This next stage has not appeared on my phone and nothing new has saved to my iCloud.

Am I missing something here? I can't seem to find anything to trigger it to save all these photos. I have plenty of space in my iCloud (bought more). I'm honestly so drained at trying to get this to work, it's ridiculous!

Sorry I appreciate I am replying to myself here! I've had another thought, if I update my iOS - currently on iOS 12 to the newest my phone (iPhone 8) can get which I believe is iOS 16 will it lose all these missing photos while updating?

As a reminder as I do waffle and things get lost - they are on my phone but I cannot get them to sync to iCloud, it stopped syncing (it had picked random ones from my phone to save to iCloud but not the vast majority of photos) when it automatically added iCloud Photos back ON to my phone (that my phone had deleted by itself) ran out of space on the device and paused it. I can't find how to unpause/restart it syncing now I have made more room.

Sorry to be such a pain. I am kicking myself for letting technology beat me believe me. I have a new phone (iPhone 15) ready to go, just as and when I can save all these photos to iCloud and know they are safe so I can put the Sim in my new phone.
