Ipad Air 5th Generation battery drain and hot to the touch!!

My (less than a year old) Ipad Air gets really, really hot at times. The battery drains within an hour or two most of the time. If I have the ipad plugged and am working on it, it can get so hot that I cannot comfortably hold it. My last Ipad (Pro) quit charging about a year and half of owning it. Apple would not fix, give me credit or replace. Nothing.

So I'm starting to have some questions about Apple and the battery over the long term and now the heat issue. Is there something I should or shouldn't be doing? I usually charge it overnight. But scrolling social media, reading, seldom watching a movie, etc. drains the battery within a couple of hours. Thanks!
