I'm looking for what to minimize the amount of apps that stay on the right side of the dock.
When I close an app, is there a way for the app to be removed from the right side of the dock without me force quitting it?
All these apps to the left of the settings app are "closed" but yet they still take up an egregious amount of room on my dock. Ideally I wouldn't like to see these apps if they have an active window running.

Turn off Apple menu > System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Show suggested and recent apps in Dock.
Edit -- the dot indicates that the apps are open and that should automatically go away when you close the app, but they should remain (without the dot) in that section if the above setting is on.
