When you have no cell signal your phone keeps looking for a carrier. It starts with a low power “page”, and keeps increasing its output power in the hopes of being heard by a cellular tower. After a few minutes it goes to checking only every 5 minutes, unless you turn on Airplane mode then turn it off; if you do that it starts over. It’s the maximum power searching that is draining the battery. If you know you don’t have cell coverage you can turn on Airplane mode and leave it on until you are somewhere you expect coverage. If you have Wi-Fi you can turn that on even in Airplane Mode.
