Connecting to TV with HDM1 adapter

Whenever I use my hdm1 adapter to my Mac and connect it to the tv the screen on the tv is frozen however the Mac works fine. Im not sure if it's the Mac or the adapter. the adapter I'm using is the one bought at the Apple Store. Any solutions?
