Basic Authentication E-Mail

Looks like Microsoft is phasing out Basic Authentication in E-Mail, September 16th, 2024…

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/modern-authentication-methods-now-needed-to-continue-syncing-outlook-email-in-non-microsoft-email-apps-c5d65390-9676-4763-b41f-d7986499a90d

Question 1. I am using POP and SNAP. Does the affect me?

Q2. What OS supports Modern Authentication, the replacement?

Q3. How do I enable Modern Authentication, or what can I use as an alternative?

My notes...

Most likely biggest factor is using Other in Mail setup, then using a Browser that doesn’t have Yahoo PW stored init to get the App PW.

Using app passwords with apps that don't support two-step verification (microsoft.com)

What about application passwords? Will that keep working?

If application passwords are being used for MFA (Multi Factor Authentication) along with basic auth as another auth mechanism, then when basic authentication is disabled, app passwords used for MFA will stop working too.

Where can I find more information?

There are several resources that we wanted to provide here as additional reading:

So far nothing in your post references Apple ... so I'm trying to understand what Apple device/product you are concerned about with this Microsoft "modern authentication method" mentioned in the Microsoft Support article you linked.

Q1: What POP email account are you referring to? What is "SNAP?" Did you mean IMAP or referring to the SnapChat app?

Q2: Are you asking for macOS? For the Apple Mail app? If so, the article already covers what would be required to access Outlook.com with that app.

Q3: Too broad of a question. Enable it for what app(s)?
