CarPlay google maps voice search initiated by car button not working

this does not work when using CarPlay

1. press the car voice activation button on steering wheel
2. i speak for google maps to navigate or search for a location

issue:

-as google maps is trying to speak and respond back to me, it cuts off before finishing the first word.

-no lists of places were generated and no navigation was started

what works:

-I manually initiate the google maps voice search from the car touch screen

-the voice prompt screen appears and I speak

-this method would work for navigation
