Continuous page numbers with different sections

Hello,

I am in a two page view, document processing document in Apple Pages with different headers for each chapter and sections. My book is just about complete, I just need a Table of Contents and to add the page numbers. I am trying to add continuous page numbers, but it only adds a page number to the page I designate, and does not continue.

When I am able to click on “Start at 1” there is already a 5 in the footer where I want to begin my page numbers. When I delete the 5 and add a 1, it only adds it on that particular page, and does not continue. When I try adding them manually, they are changed on every page so they are not continuous. So on every right hand page I get the same number.

In the Document tab under Section under

Headers & Footers

Check Hide on first page of section

Check Left & right pages are different

Uncheck Match previous section

Page numbering

Format 1,2,3

Numbering

Unselect Continue from previous section

Select Start at 1

Section starts on right page

Create new section (already selected this to start the new section.)

What am I missing? This is driving me crazy. Nothing seems to work. I cannot get any consecutive page numbers anywhere. Please help. Thank you in advance.
