Playlists created on my iPhone disappear when it syncs with my desktop

I create a playlist on my iPhone 15 Pro Max while traveling and everything is great. However, when I return home and my iPhone is on the same network as my desktop computer and I run iTunes on the desktop, the name of the playlist syncs to iTunes on my desktop but is empty. Likewise, the playlist on my iPhone is now empty. This never used to be an issue, but has occurred repeatedly over the past year or two. What am I missing?

PS I am not using Apple Music. These are songs that I have purchased through iTunes.
